Si bien suele ser uno de los lugares más elegidos para viajar de junio a diciembre, la época donde llegan las ballenas franca austral para aparearse y tener a las crías, Puerto Madryn también es un destino con buenas opciones para el verano, con un mar azul profundo que impacta. Ubicada a orillas del Golfo Nuevo, esta ciudad de Chubut tiene playas con aguas transparentes y muy seguras porque prácticamente no tienen oleaje.

A lo largo de los cuatro kilómetros que se extiende la costa, también acompañan paradores con propuestas gastronómicas –con mariscos imperdibles– y de servicio, como el alquiler de sombrillas o carpas, y tablas para hacer stand up paddle o kayak. Además, se pueden practicar deportes como buceo y salir con el snorkel para nadar con lobos marinos, excursión que se disfruta mucho más con las altas temperaturas de esta época.

“La propuesta de Madryn para el verano es principalmente sol y playa. Que vengas a disfrutar del calor, de playas patagónicas y del contacto directo con la naturaleza”, dice Cecilia Pavia, secretaria de Turismo de la ciudad.

Este año su costa sumó un nuevo punto de interés: Las Canteras, dentro del Área Natural Protegida El Doradillo, elegida recientemente como una de las playas más lindas de Sudamérica en los Traveller ‘s Choice de TripAdvisor, la plataforma de opiniones de viajeros.

Está a solo 15 kilómetros del centro, hacia el norte por la ruta 1. Se trata de un lugar tranquilo que mucha gente elige para el verano pero que, a diferencia de las playas más céntricas, es de canto rodado.

Suele ser un área muy codiciada en la temporada de ballenas, porque es elegida por los cetáceos para reproducirse y se los puede ver desde la costa, sin necesidad de embarcarse, a muy pocos metros. “Es un lugar único, maravilloso. Es el avistaje de ballenas más sustentable que se puede hacer”, agrega Pavia sobre este atractivo.

En busca de saltos

Si bien en verano las ballenas no están, sí hay otra especie que se deja ver y mucho: los delfines oscuros, un poco más chicos que los habituales grises, llegan a las costas de Madryn en busca de anchoítas, su alimento preferido. Para verlos hay que contratar una excursión que sale del muelle Piedrabuena (en el centro de la ciudad) y navega unas tres horas.

Es un paseo tranquilo para hacer en familia y se logra ver gran cantidad de ejemplares en su hábitat natural. “Es una excursión que te permite acercarte a estos animales maravillosos y aprender de su comportamiento”, explica Marcos Fourgeaux gerente y capitán de embarcación de la empresa Cruceros Ecológicos, pionera en el avistaje de delfines desde hace más de 30 años.

A diferencia de lo que ocurre con las ballenas, esta excursión tiene una probabilidad de avistaje mucho más alta ya que la zona de Puerto Madryn es conocida por la presencia de delfines. “Es importante tener en cuenta que la cantidad puede variar según la época y las condiciones climáticas. Sin embargo, desde diciembre a la fecha, estamos avistando una familia de delfines de aproximadamente 200 ejemplares”, agrega.

Mirar las estrellas

A las playas, la gastronomía y los avistajes, Madryn también ofrece la experiencia de “mirar el cielo”. Este paseo empieza cuando el sol está a punto de caer y se desarrolla a ocho kilómetros de la ciudad, en la estancia San Guillermo.

“La mayoría de los turistas se sorprenden de la cantidad de estrellas que vemos a no más de 20 minutos de la ciudad”, expresa Nani Pegoraro, la única guía que ofrece esta actividad en Puerto Madryn.

El paseo dura unas tres horas donde se conoce sobre las estrellas, su origen, constelaciones, cosmovisiones y también sobre la vida rural en Puerto Madryn. Se hace observación con telescopio, con binoculares y directa del cielo.

El costo de la actividad es de $63.000 para mayores y $44.000 para menores (de 6 a 11 años). Incluye una infusión caliente y unas galletitas para comer, pero no incluye traslado hasta la estancia.

Precios congelados

Desde diciembre, a partir de un anuncio de la Asociación de Agencias de Viajes y Turismo de Península Valdés, Puerto Madryn mantiene sus tarifas sin modificaciones hasta Semana Santa. Esta decisión aplica para hospedajes y excursiones principalmente.

Por lo que un hotel de 4 estrellas que hoy cuesta entre $150 mil y $160 mil la noche en base doble, se mantendrá de esa manera durante toda la temporada 2025.

Lo mismo sucederá con algunas excursiones como los paseos náuticos que van desde los $60 mil hasta los $100 mil para adultos y desde los $30 mil hasta los $50 mil para menores.

A esta posibilidad, el destino también le sumó una serie de descuentos y promociones que van desde 20% en tarifas de diversos hoteles, hostels y alojamientos de la ciudad, hasta 10% o 15% off para excursiones como snorkeling con lobos marinos.

Sombra y actividades

Una sombrilla o carpa en la playa este verano cuesta alrededor de $35 mil por día y de un camastro unos $45 mil por día.

Alquilar un kayak va desde los $20 mil a $40 mil la hora. Excursión a Punto Tombo para ver pingüinos, $120.000.

Alquileres de vehículos desde $60.000 y actividades de mountain bike, con tarifas que van desde $10.000 hasta $30.000 por un día completo.

Los amantes de los deportes acuáticos podrán practicar stand up paddle por $25.000 la hora, windsurf con un curso de 6 clases por $200.000 y kayak por $20.000 la hora.

Un avistaje de delfines cuesta $100.000 para adultos y $50.000 para niños. Las salidas parten del muelle Piedrabuena, en pleno centro de Madryn, y duran alrededor tres horas.

Buceo

Para esta temporada de verano, la Asociación de Operadoras de Buceo (AOB) de Puerto Madryn ha decidido mantener sus tarifa. Se podrá disfrutar del buceo bautismo por $125.000, mientras que el snorkeling con lobos marinos tiene un costo de $150.000. 

Agenda de verano

Durante febrero continúan los eventos, por ejemplo de artes marciales, como Ragnarok (22 de febrero) y la concentración de karate en la playa (12 y 13 de febrero).

Para los amantes de la equitación, del 28 de febrero al 2 de marzo, el Club Hípico será sede de la Copa de Equitación. El cierre del mes tendrá como broche final el tradicional Natatlón Belsito el 23 de febrero.

Carnaval

Puerto Madryn se prepara para vivir una nueva edición de los Carnavales del Mar, un evento que ya se ha convertido en una tradición esperada tanto por los residentes como por los turistas que visitan la ciudad en esta época del año. Con una propuesta llena de color, música y alegría, esta celebración popular se llevará a cabo el 1° y 2 de marzo en un escenario emblemático: la Avenida Roca.

The Argentine beach with transparent waters chosen as one of the most beautiful in South America

Although it is usually one of the most chosen places to travel from June to December, the time when southern right whales arrive to mate and have their calves, Puerto Madryn is also a destination with good options for the summer, with a deep blue sea that impresses. Located on the shores of the Golfo Nuevo, this city of Chubut has beaches with transparent and very safe waters because they have practically no waves.

Along the four kilometers that the coast extends, there are also inns with gastronomic proposals – with unmissable seafood – and services, such as the rental of umbrellas or tents, and boards for stand up paddle or kayaking. In addition, you can practice sports such as diving and go snorkelling to swim with sea lions, an excursion that is much more enjoyable with the high temperatures of this time.

“Madryn’s proposal for the summer is mainly sun and beach. “That you come to enjoy the heat, Patagonian beaches and direct contact with nature,” says Cecilia Pavia, secretary of Tourism of the city.

This year its coast added a new point of interest: Las Canteras, within the El Doradillo Protected Natural Area, recently chosen as one of the most beautiful beaches in South America in the Traveler’s Choice of TripAdvisor, the traveler opinions platform.

It is only 15 kilometers from the center, heading north along Route 1. It is a quiet place that many people choose for the summer but, unlike the more central beaches, it is made of pebbles.

It is usually a highly coveted area during whale season, because it is chosen by cetaceans to reproduce and they can be seen from the coast, without needing to embark, just a few meters away. “It is a unique, wonderful place. “It is the most sustainable whale watching you can do,” adds Pavia about this attraction.

In search of jumps

Although the whales are not there in summer, there is another species that can be seen a lot: the dusky dolphins, a little smaller than the usual gray ones, come to the coasts of Madryn in search of anchovies, their favorite food. To see them you have to hire an excursion that leaves from the Piedrabuena pier (in the city center) and sails for about three hours.

It is a quiet walk to do with the family and you can see a large number of specimens in their natural habitat. “It is an excursion that allows you to get closer to these wonderful animals and learn from their behavior,” explains Marcos Fourgeaux, manager and boat captain of the Ecological Cruises company, a pioneer in dolphin watching for more than 30 years.

Unlike what happens with whales, this excursion has a much higher probability of sighting since the Puerto Madryn area is known for the presence of dolphins. “It is important to keep in mind that the amount may vary depending on the season and weather conditions. However, from December to date, we are seeing a family of dolphins of approximately 200 individuals,” he adds.

Looking at the stars

In addition to beaches, gastronomy and sightseeing, Madryn also offers the experience of “looking at the sky”. This walk begins when the sun is about to set and takes place eight kilometers from the city, at the San Guillermo ranch.

“Most tourists are surprised by the number of stars we see no more than 20 minutes from the city,” says Nani Pegoraro, the only guide who offers this activity in Puerto Madryn.

The tour lasts about three hours where you learn about the stars, their origin, constellations, worldviews and also about rural life in Puerto Madryn. Observation is made with a telescope, with binoculars and directly from the sky.

The cost of the activity is $63,000 for adults and $44,000 for children (from 6 to 11 years old). It includes a hot infusion and some cookies to eat, but does not include transportation to the stay.

Frozen prices

Since December, based on an announcement by the Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies of Peninsula Valdés, Puerto Madryn has maintained its rates unchanged until Easter. This decision applies mainly to accommodations and excursions.

So a 4-star hotel that today costs between $150,000 and $160,000 per night on a double basis, will remain that way throughout the 2025 season.

The same will happen with some excursions such as nautical tours that range from $60,000 to $100,000 for adults and from $30,000 to $50,000 for children.

To this possibility, the destination also added a series of discounts and promotions ranging from 20% on rates at various hotels, hostels and accommodations in the city, to 10% or 15% off for excursions such as snorkeling with sea lions.

For this summer season, the Association of Diving Operators (AOB) of Puerto Madryn has decided to maintain its rates. You can enjoy baptismal diving for $125,000, while snorkeling with sea lions costs $150,000.

During February, events continue, for example martial arts events, such as Ragnarok (February 22) and the karate rally on the beach (February 12 and 13).

For horse riding lovers, from February 28 to March 2, the Equestrian Club will host the Horse Riding Cup. The closing of the month will be the traditional Belsito Natathlon on February 23.

Carnival

Puerto Madryn is preparing to experience a new edition of the Carnivals of the Sea, an event that has already become a tradition expected by both residents and tourists who visit the city at this time of year. With a proposal full of color, music and joy, this popular celebration will take place on March 1 and 2 in an emblematic setting: Roca Avenue.
