El Sur de Australia, especialmente la zona que rodea la encantadora ciudad de Adelaida con su proximidad a la playa y su inmensa proyección hacia el interior montañoso de Australia, es un regalo de la naturaleza para las actividades al aire libre, los deportes y la combinación de ambos.

El australiano es en general un pueblo muy volcado a el deporte y “condenado” como está por cuestiones geográficas y de falta de agua a vivir en el perímetro marítimo de su enorme país, ha desarrollado una gran vocación por todo lo que le conecta con el mar desde el punto de vista deportivo.

Pero esta relación entre los australianos y los deportes náuticos no impidió que desarrollaran también otros eventos deportivos muy cerca del mar que, con el tiempo, se convirtieron en eventos internacionales para los deportistas.

Por eso, cada año ciclistas de todo el mundo se reúnen en Adelaida para afrontar un desafío de 10 días conocido como Santos Tour Down Under.

El Tour  es una vuelta por etapas de ciclismo profesional en ruta que se disputa en la zona este de la geografía de la Australia Meridional. Tiene lugar en la tercera semana de enero y pertenece al calendario UCI WorldTour, máxima categoría de las carreras profesionales.

Se corrió por primera vez en 1999, y desde entonces se ha celebrado anualmente sin interrupciones hasta la temporada de 2021, cuando la carrera no pudo celebrarse en la fecha que correspondía debido a la Pandemia por coronavirus.

El Tour Down Under marca el inicio de las competencias de máxima categoría (UWT) del calendario ciclista profesional.

En su inicio el evento formó parte de la categoría 2.4. Al año siguiente ascendió a la 2.3. Desde la creación de los Circuitos Continentales UCI en 2005 se integró en el UCI Oceania Tour dentro de la categoría 2.HC (máxima categoría de estos circuitos). Desde la temporada 2008 se incluyó en el calendario del UCI ProTour (actualmeUCI WorldTour), siendo la primera prueba no europea en formar parte de él.

Simon Gerrans, con 4 triunfos, es el ciclista que más victorias posee. André Greipel tiene el récord de triunfos parciales con 18. 

Historia y Recorrido

Siempre ha comenzado y finalizado en Adelaida con etapas meramente llanas a las que a lo largo de los años se han ido introduciendo dificultades. 

Desde el año 2002 se incluyó una etapa con algo de dificultad montañosa que acaba en Willunga, al principio con un paso, y posteriormente con dos, por un puerto puntuable, cuyo paso final estaba situado a unos 20 km de meta y que desde del 2012 se convirtió en final en alto. A partir del 2009 también se incluyó otra etapa rompepiernas con un circuito sinuoso alrededor de Stirling que suele producir pequeños cortes en el grupo principal y además desde esa edición del 2012 se incluyó otra etapa de cierta dificultad montañosa, reduciéndose así las posibilidades de los sprinters de cara a la victoria final. Con esas modificaciones han conseguido ganar la carrera otro tipo de corredores maś completos como Michael Rogers, Mikel Astarloza, Luis León Sánchez, Simon Gerrans y Martin Elmiger entre otros.

Jhonatan Narváez, ciclista ecuatoriano del UAE Team Emirates-XRG, ganó el Santos Tour Down Under 2025. Esta fue su primera victoria en el Tour Down Under y la más importante de su carrera en el UCI WorldTour.

El segundo lugar lo ocupó Javier Romo del Movistar Team y el tercero Finn Fisher-Black de Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe.

En la etapa final, disputada en Adelaida, el australiano Sam Welsford de Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe se impuso en un sprint espectacular.

The Santos Tour Down Under in Australia

South Australia, especially the area surrounding the charming city of Adelaide with its proximity to the beach and its immense projection into the mountainous Australian outback, is a gift from nature for outdoor activities, for sports and for the combination of both.

It has always started and ended in Adelaide with merely flat stages to which difficulties have been introduced over the years. 

Since 2002, a stage with some mountainous difficulty was included that ends in Willunga, at first with one pass, and later with two, through a scoring pass, whose final pass was located about 20 km from the finish line and which since 2012 became a high finish. Starting in 2009, another leg-breaking stage was also included with a winding circuit around Stirling that usually produces small cuts in the main group and also since that 2012 edition another stage of some mountainous difficulty was included, thus reducing the sprinters’ chances of achieving final victory.2 With these modifications, other types of more complete runners such as Michael Rogers, Mikel Astarloza, Luis León Sánchez, Simon Gerrans and Martin Elmiger have managed to win the race. among others.
